BIOGRAPHY:
Graham Dixon was Head of Radio at the European Broadcasting Union in Geneva until December 2020; previously, he had been Managing Editor, BBC Radio 3. While at the BBC, he was strongly involved in international issues and chaired the EBU Music Group.
At the EBU his responsibilities included advocacy for public media, focussing on positive role of radio within society; fostering innovation within the public radio community across Europe, launching the dotRadio domain and ensuring the continued accessibility of radio on digital platforms. He now lives in London and retains a strong interest in media issues, using his experience to undertake various projects within the radio world.
Originally, Graham studied organ at the Royal Academy of Music, as the Sir John Goss Organ Scholar; here he studied for the London University BMus, as well as diplomas in performance. His interests moved from performance to musicology, and after study in both Italy (Rome and Bologna) and Germany (Münster and East Berlin, former DDR), Graham was awarded a musicology PhD from the University of Durham for opening up the repertory of liturgical music in early 17th-century Rome. After two years as University Research Fellow at Liverpool University, he joined the BBC, as a Producer specialising in early music, later progressing to editorial positions, with responsibility for programme output and International collaboration.
With the rapidly changing media environment, occasioned by growing internet use and increased competition, Graham was keen understand the opportunities and challenges, so studies for an MBA at the University of Bradford; this was awarded with distinction for his work on reshaping radio production for the challenge of multiplatform delivery.
As Managing Editor, he was responsible for editorial standards, alignment between online and linear channel, commercial policy, alongside making the case for public media.
In 2014, he completed an MA in Buddhist Studies at the University of Wales, writing a dissertation on how the first generation of monks transmitted the innovative teachings. This was not by preaching uninvited, but rather through answering the sincere enquiries of those who came to enquire were impressed by their serene demeanour.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and the Royal Asiatic Society.
MOTIVATION:
Of course, even professionally, the formal CV does not tell the whole story!
When I left the EBU at the end of 2020, I made a statement which sums up those fundamental values which have motivated me throughout my career:
Supporting public media is a privilege: in the face of counterfeits, and an international crisis, trustworthy information is more important than ever. Sharing international programming is vital in extending our horizons beyond our national frontiers.
The recent words of Ursula von der Leyen about solidarity are highly relevant in this context too:
It is about pooling our strength and speaking together in a world full of great powers. And in a time of crisis, it is about pulling each other up. Instead of trying to get back to your feet, alone.
This spirit was strongly evident during 2020 as the EBU and its Members came together to share solutions and support audiences amid the unprecedented challenges of such dark days.
Both at the BBC and the EBU, my motivation has flowed from two fundamental beliefs.
- We are stronger and more creative when people from different countries and backgrounds work together.
- Our lives are enriched when a broad, diverse range of cultural experiences is made freely accessible.
2020 marks the anniversary of the philosopher, educationalist and theologian, Jan Amos Comenius (d.1670) who lived in equally troubled times. Among other initiatives, he proposed the establishment of international institutions to share knowledge and pursue mutual understanding. On the last day of his 350th anniversary year, his vision remains more relevant than ever. Public media - supported by the EBU - expands minds, crossing our political and cultural borders.
